The Architectural Record has a thought-provoking feature up on schools. It’s hard to make spaces welcoming to all students. Even Zaha Hadid, arguably the best mind in the business, doesn’t quite hit the bulleye — the industrial mood is off-putting no matter how green the kids’ lockers are. Elementary schools might be easier than institutions for older students, because you don’t have to worry about the kids feeling patronised. NAC Architecture’s Machias Elementary is my fave of the schools presented, with lots of wood and natural light — though I’m sure the pictured blue skies aren’t typical north of Seattle.
